Metcalfe Park Roundabout

EGA designed an eight legged roundabout as part of a sewer separation project in mid-town Omaha, Nebraska. The sewer separation project involved the demolition of an existing intersection where eight legs came together in a small area of space and were all approaches were stop controlled. Four of the eight legs carried considerable traffic, while the other four were basically neighborhood streets. The purpose of the roundabout was to improve the existing geometrics of the intersection, slow down through traveling vehicles and improve pedestrian safety.

The challenges in design included the non-symmetrical approach of eight legs of the intersection, uneven traffic volume loads on the legs of the intersections, adjacent properties that would be impacted by the improvements and provision of the improved pedestrian facilities and bike path. EGA developed six alternatives based on a preliminary sketch to present to the City of Omaha design team. One of the sketches involved an oval shaped roundabout, which would provide the necessary geometry for safe ingress/egress from the intersection. This preliminary oval then evolved into the eventual final design for the intersection, which resembles an hourglass or peanut shape. Prior to final design approval being given, EGA assembled the entire intersection in an abandoned parking lot with cones and markers to test the design for speed and to confirm that large vehicles could traverse the intersection. The design vehicles were filmed during the test and snow removal, fire and garbage vehicles and crews were interviewed to gather input. The roundabout opened in December of 2003 and was finished six months ahead of the original schedule. Since the opening of the roundabout no major problems have been encountered and traffic operations have improved and vehicular speeds in and out of the roundabout have decreased.
