Various Demolition Projects

Ehrhart Griffin & Associates/REGA Engineering Group have performed topographic and boundary surveying and civil engineering for a number of significant demolition projects in the Metropolitan Omaha area. Engineering design facets have included:

• Conceptual and feasibility studies
• Preparation of preliminary budget cost opinions
• Public utility coordination and documentation
• Preparation of construction documents
• Bidding services
• Construction management, including observation

Each demolition project contained a unique set of design parameters specific to the site and future project planned for the area. Some of these design parameters included:

  • Utility coordination and rerouting were a paramount concern to our design team, as these demolition projects were generally located in fully developed urban areas. Existing utilities in these areas were generally quite aged and, when coupled with poor or questionable utility records, presented a quite a challenge to our designer.
  • Dispersal of material rubble generated from onsite buildings on most projects presented a significant cost barrier to the success of the project. By coordinating with the geotechnical engineer, a system of crushing and blending with soil was created to reuse the mixed material as backfill on the project site, thereby eliminating the haul-off costs associated with the rubble.
  • Coordination with the ultimate redevelopment of the site was necessary on most projects in orderto properly plan the demolition activities. In the Convention Center/Arena project, utility corridors for future utility routing were developed in order to establish zones of complete removal. In non-critical areas (beneath parking lot pavements, for example), demolition was limited to the upper five feet of existing grade, thereby creating a significant cost savings that was essential to the project.
  • Project sites, such as the Omaha Park 8 site or the Union Pacific Railroad Center site required coordination to make the site Contractor ready. Coordination included utility relocation/protection, establishment of future floor elevation to determine grading limits, and subgrade preparation necessitated by the poor soils conditions.

The following is a list of recent demolition projects EGA/REGA has performed design and construction administration:

Bid Amount

Creighton University (6 different sites) $ 285,110
Union Pacific Railroad Center $ 1,488,000
Omaha Park 8 $ 1,403,000
Omaha Stockyards $ 1,600,000
Wilson Packing House $ 2,944,000
Convention Center/Arena $ 5,400,000
